Students from at least 10 high schools across Belize City streamed into the Belize City Center on Tuesday April 17 as the first spectators to fill the seats in the brand new state of the art auditorium. The event was a pre-opening of the facility which easily accommodated the young people as they sat and saw the ACC female basketall team take on the EP Yorke team. There was also a match up between the ACC male team and the Sadie Vernon team.

The hum of activity and the roar of the cheering youngsters in the arena made it plain for anyone to understand that the city now has a true venue for sporting and other activities.

Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture, Hon. Patrick Faber explained that the use of the Civic on this day was testament to the government putting into action what it has been saying, that is that the wonderful and expensive facility belongs to the young people and the people of Belize. He added that the first to use the facility were the high school students but they will soon be followed by the two Belize City Teams, the Defenders and the Hurricanes of the NEBL. And while that will be in the near future, next in line to use the Civic will be Teachers who will be celebrating Teacher’s Day in the next few days. Hon. Faber noted that the Civic will be able to host, for the first time in history, the over 6 thousand teachers from across the country in one location. “No other facility can hold this amount of people,” stated Faber.

He concluded that the government was proud to have the facility under management to ensure that it is maintained in tip top shape.
