When you think of the word “Millennial”, you’re likely familiar with the panic that consumes the older generations about how entitled or lazy we are. Hopefully you’re not buying into the terrible stereotypes, though, because Millennials are killing it. Given that we’re the future leaders of tomorrow and we’ll one day be the same age as those who despair at the mere thought of us, it’s time to set a few things straight. In fact, Millennials might be the best generation yet, and here’s proof:

1. WE’RE STRAIGHT UP ENTREPRENEURS.

Other generations like to make us seem lazy, but it’s not that we don’t want to work – we just don’t want to work for others. Due to us being so literate in technology, we’re more interested in running companies and starting our own brands.

2. WE’RE MORE AWARE OF BIG ISSUES THAN GENERATION X.

Being “woke” means being more aware of social issues, and Millennials stay woke 24/7. Not a week goes by without a public outrage over police brutality, sexism, or any number of other issues. We don’t get change from people being complacent, so the unrest is actually a good thing, and young people taking to social media and the streets to express it is amazing.

3. WE’RE BECOMING THE MOST EDUCATED GENERATION.

Although we have some ways to go more of us are seeking higher learning. Yeah, most of us are bogged down by student loans, but the upside is we’re the most educated generation in Belizean history.

4. WE HAVE OUR PRIORITIES STRAIGHT.

Other generations make it seem like we only care about Twitter hashtags, but we have serious problems to think about, thanks to the older generation causing the recession. According to demographic intelligence, we might be getting older, but don’t expect us to get married until later in life. Millennials are putting weddings off partially because we’re taking on more education and trying to get more situated in our careers.

5. WE’RE MORE INDEPENDENT THINKERS.

Not only do we want independence by going into business for ourselves, but we think independently despite the system we’re operating within. We constantly question the messages society puts out through television and music through think pieces. We’re also more likely to identify as Independent rather than UDP or PUP.

6. WE LOVE TURNING THE STATUS QUO UPSIDE DOWN.

Just a couple of decades ago, most teen movies relied hard on stereotypes like jocks keeping the nerds and geeks down. Now who rules the school in this very technologically advanced world? Nerds and geeks! And we have more young people speaking out about how schools respond terribly to bullying. Looks like teen movie are going to have to rely on different tropes.

7. WE STAY INFORMED.

Again, many of our elders think we’re wasting our time on social media, but we Millennials rely on online sources to get our news and current information

8. WE’RE MORE CONNECTED TO TECHNOLOGY.

Yeah, there are some negatives to constantly being connected like oversharing, but there are definitely positives to this lifestyle. Thanks to the Internet, we’re getting the news that TV outlets won’t cover, and people all over the world can band together, thanks to open communication.

9.  WE’RE MORE CREATIVE.

Our generation offer employers not only advanced technological knowledge, but also the ability to master new skills in creative ways. These are definitely good things to navigate this world that we are helping to create.

10. WE DEMAND MORE FROM OUR LEADERS IN GOVERNMENT.

Thanks to staying woke, interviewers are now asking government officials much more important questions and holding them to higher standards like accountability, transparency and better governance. When the public is outraged about something, we like to see high-profile people put their platform to good use.

So do not ever buy into terrible stereo-types. Millennials are out here killing it!
