Belize City Police have arrested and charged 28 year-old Marlon Everett for the weekend murder of 25 year-old Albert Ervin Johnson, a native of Punta Gorda Town, who moved to Belize City recently.

Police say that on Friday night, April 20, 2018, at around 11 o’clock, they responded to reports of a shooting on Rectory Lane in the Southern Foreshore area. When they arrived they found Johnson’s body lying face up on the street; he was suffering from 2 gunshots to the head.

Initial investigations indicate that Johnson was walking on Rectory Lane when 3 men approached him from behind. One of the men pulled out a weapon and shot him twice; he bled out on the street and died there.

Initially, investigators were treating him as “John Doe” due to finding him without any identification. They later identified him as Johnson, a man who, up until recently, was living in Punta Gorda.

The cops have not revealed any details as a motive for Johnson’s killing, but they announced on Monday, April 23 that Everett was arrested and charged with murder for his shooting death. He was arraigned and remanded to the Belize Central Prison.

Residents of PG tell the press that Johnson was living as a homeless man in that town, and that they suspected him of struggling with drug addiction. It is also suspected that this same drug addiction caused him to develop mental deficiencies. A few kind residents of the town reportedly tried to offer him assistance to get on his feet, but he reportedly made poor choices with the assistance he was given.

PG residents believe that he recently traveled to Belize City, where he was able to connect with friends and family here. There is worry that he may have gotten involved with the wrong type of company, who lured him into some sort of dangerous underworld activity, which got him killed.
