William “Danny” Mason and five other co-accused persons were taken before Senior Magistrate Merlene Moody in the Belmopan Magistrate’s Court on Monday, April 23, 2018. There, the preliminary inquiry into the kidnapping of Lloyd Thiessen and his wife, a Mennonite couple, was heard.

Mason as well as Ashton Vanegas, of Camalote Village, brothers Keiron and Terrence Fernandez, and Ernest Henry Castillo, all of Roaring Creek, were represented by attorney Herbert Panton who made a lengthy submission requesting that the kidnapping charges be thrown out. The basis of his submission was that there was insufficient evidence to prove the charge of kidnapping.

The crown was represented by prosecutor Sergeant Bonifacio Rash who submitted that the statements given by the complainants were sufficient to amount to a prema facie case and as a result, the matter is to be sent up to the Supreme Court for trial.

After listening to both submissions, Senior Magistrate Moody has reserved her ruling on the matter for May 7, 2018.

The six men are already facing murder charges. In February 2017, the men were committed for trial for the beheading murder of Pastor Llewellyn Lucas as well as conspiracy to commit murder and kidnapping of the pastor and David Dodd. This case is still pending hearing.
