On Thursday, April 19, 2018 at about 1:50 p.m., police responded to a road traffic accident between miles 6 and 7 on the Stann Creek Valley Road. Upon arrival at the scene, the officers saw a Hispanic male person lying motionless on the road suffering from head and body injuries. They also saw a gray Mitsubishi Outlander on the left side of the road.

Initial investigation revealed that Shamir Leslie, a 24-year-old clerk of Placencia Village, was traveling from Belmopan to Placencia along with Bernard Leslie, a 23-year-old tour guide of Placencia, and Teron Terry, a 27-year-old cook of Seine Bight Village. Upon approaching Xiabel Gas Station, the Hispanic male person, who was later identified as Pedro Cucul, was walking across the road to catch a bus heading to Belmopan when he was hit by the Mitsubishi Outlander.

Cucul sustained serious head injuries as well as abrasions to the chest and left foot. He was transported to the Southern Regional Hospital for medical attention where he later succumbed to his injuries. Cucul was an 82-year-old Belizean farmer of Big Falls, Toledo District.
