A hit and run traffic accident at the Guinea Grass Road Junction has left a 50-year-old man hospitalized. On Friday, April 20, 2018 at about 6:45 p.m., police responded to a traffic accident at the junction and upon arrival, they observed ambulance personnel treating a male person for multiple injuries. That man was later identified as Gerardo Mendoza, a 50-year-old Belizean of Rose Wood St, Orange Walk Town.

Initial investigation revealed that Mendoza fell off a Nissan pickup truck that was travelling from the direction of Orange Walk to Belize City. The victim was taken to the Northern Regional Hospital and later transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he is being treated but remains in an unconscious state. The driver of the vehicle remains unknown and police are investigating, however, there are conflicting reports being made by the family.

According to Mendoza’s son, Luis Mendoza, the police have informed the family that his father fell from the pan of the truck but after posting the details of the accident on social media, he received a phone call that stated otherwise. The man that called him stated that he was a passenger in the pan of the Nissan and saw when they hit Mendoza, who was riding his bicycle. Mendoza reportedly flew over the vehicle, then fell in and out of the pan of the truck.

Regardless of what happened, Mendoza remains hospitalized and his wife, Teresita Torres, has made a plea with the driver of the vehicle. “The only thing that I ask is for him to turn himself in. We don’t want to press charges against him but that he turns himself in and talk with us, that he helps us with our expenses because my husband is in a very bad condition. If he has family, has brothers he would not like what he did to my husband to happen to him… I feel desperate, please you who are listening to me soften your heart, come speak to me I will understand you. I don’t want to have you locked up because I know this can happen to anyone.”
