Police are about to bring criminal charges against a 15 year-old male minor for the fatal stabbing of 15 year-old Arkel August, a resident of Kraal Road.

Police say that around 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, they visited the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where they found August suffering from a stab wound to the left side of the chest.

August’s mother, Dana August, told the press that on that afternoon, he went out to the basketball court located at on the Wilton Cumberbatch Field, which is right around the lane from his house.

Residents in the neighborhood say that basketball is one of his favorite past times, and he went to practice with his team mates for a tournament that they are participating in. While they were doing their basketball drills, a fight reportedly broke out between the 15 year-old suspect and another young man. Reports are that August tried to stop the fight between the two youths, and in his attempt to act as peacemaker, he allegedly offended the 15 year-old suspect.

That young man reportedly went home, came back with a pocket knife, and before anyone could react, he attacked August. The knife injured August in the chest, and realizing that this wound was life threatening, those nearby rushed him to the KHMH.

Dana August said that she rushed to the KHMH and found her son injured, but he was conscious. He joyfully told his attending physician that he needed to get his treatment as soon as possible so that he could be home for the following day, Sunday, April 28, when Dana, his mother, was celebrating her birthday.

Unfortunately, during the surgeries to repair the damage to his organs, August’s health took a turn for the worst. He had to be placed in an induced coma, and the first signs that he was in serious danger was when his kidneys began to fail. On Sunday, during his mother’s birthday, he passed away.

August, is described as the type of young man that’s a model to youths growing up on Belize’s City’s Southside. At the time of his death he was a third form business student at the Canaan Seven Day Adventist High School.

The High School announced his passing, saying, “Arkel August was a promising young man! He was very respectful, energetic and loved to smile! Please pray for his classmates in 3 Business! We will surely miss you, Arkel August!”

Similar sentiments are being shared about his respectful, positive, and calm demeanor by those who made his acquaintance.

As to the young man who is accused of killing him, his mother, Dana, says that with God’s help, she has forgiven that young man, and she sincerely hopes that he will get the help he needs to learn to live with the consequences of his actions.

Arkel August is the second son that Dana August has lost. Back in June 2016, her other son, Elroy Perdomo, was shot and killed after he attended a funeral. It was widely suspected that Perdomo was a victim of “street justice”, since he was investigated and released in connection with another murder that happened days before
