A family of four Hattieville residents is lucky to be home after two of the four were charged with drug and ammunition related offenses in November 2017. Sonia Shepherd, 61, her children, Aretha and Kenrick Danderson, and her 18-year-old grandson Hakeem O’Brien were in court on Friday, May 4, 2018.

The family members had initially pleaded not guilty to the charges of possession of a controlled drug and for keeping ammunition without granted a gun license. About 40 grams of cannabis were found inside a room, which was occupied by Kenrick Danderson while eight rounds of 9mm ammunition were found inside a room occupied by Hakeem O’Brien. On advice of their attorney, they took ownership and luckily for them, things played out in their favor.

Danderson was fined $1,000 despite his previous drug convictions. He has until July 31, 2018 to pay in default of a year in prison. O’Brien was ordered to pay a fine of $250 in default of three months’ imprisonment. The charges were withdrawn from the others since Danderson and O’Brien took ownership of the drugs and ammunition.
