For years, from in the late ‘80s cable operators have been pirating signals from the US allowing Belizeans to enjoy almost 200 channels of various television channels. The practice was a simple one, operators would purchase channel packages in the US and simply amplify and multiply the signal and sell to subscribers in Belize. Those glory days are now fast coming to an end with the strict enforcement of copyright laws.

On May 9th a letter from the Belize Cable Television Operators Association began to be circulated where they are telling subscribers that, “It has been agreed by the  cable operators that the new rate for the basic cable package will be capped at BZ $60.00 inclusive of General Sales Tax. This increase will come into effect as of June 1, 2018.” The basic cable package as we understand it will feature 80 channels and will not include feature channels like HBO, Showtime, Cinemax and other channels like these. The package will only include some 80 channels which are yet to be disclosed.

The letter has endorsement by Coral Cable Vision, Central TV and Internet, Centaur, Ladyville and CBC. Those are almost all the major cable television providers in the country.
