Juan Angel Vargas, a 44 year-old Honduran business man who has been residing in Belize for over 20 years, was killed in an early morning robbery after spending the late night selling hotdogs. The armed gunman mercilessly shot him to death and then robbed him of all the money he earned from that night’s sales.

Police say that at around 4:20 a.m, they responded to a report of shots being fired at # 41 Tigris Street, which is where Vargas lives. When they responded, they found his lifeless body face down on the street; someone shot him in the head.

What police have since been able to determine is that at around 3:55 a.m., he arrived home in his grey van after a night out on the job. While he was unloading his vending equipment, a gunman snuck up on him from behind.

His nephew told the press that it appears that the gunman, and at least one accomplice, were following him from the time he and his employee left their vending location. His worker, who was assisting him, had only just gone inside to drop off some of the equipment. It appears that the armed robber waited until he was alone, and he had his hands full before he opened fire.

One of those bullets injured him in the head. As soon as he fell to the ground, the shooter scrambled over to him, and stole a bag he used for the nightly sales, and 2 others which carried his personal documents and US currency he saved up. It is estimated that the thief/murderer escaped with somewhere in the vicinity of $2,000 total.

By the time his family and his worker were able to get to him, he had already passed away, and minutes later, the cops could only transport him to the KHMH, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Vargas is a father of 5, and his family describes him as a person who was kind and generous to others. He was also a well-known pool player who has had a very distinguished and successful career in the sport, with numerous victories, trophies and awards.

Unfortunately, he becomes 1 of 4 victims gunned down over the holiday weekend, in circumstances where very bad things happened to good and honest people.
