On Friday, May 18, 2018 at about 7:30 p.m., police responded to a road traffic accident between miles 45 and 46 on the George Price Highway. Upon arrival at the scene, they observed the motionless body of a female. That female was identified as Silvia Zavala, a 30-year-old Belizean domestic of a Belmopan address.

Zavala was observed to have multiple injuries to the body. The responding officers also observed a red and black Honlei motorcycle on the highway with damages to the rear portion. Initial investigation revealed that Zavala was traveling from Cotton Tree Village to Belmopan. Upon reaching between miles 45 and 46, she was hit from the rear by a taxi that flung her from the cycle. The vehicle fled the scene. Zavala’s body was transported to the Western Regional Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

For this hit and run accident, police formally arrested and charged Earl Wright, a 46-year-old taxi driver of Camalote Village, for manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, failure to stop and render aid, and driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention.
