Carlton Jarrett Moreira was killed in the area of Lake View Street at around 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23, 2018. Police responded to reports of the shooting and that is when they observed the lifeless body of a male person with two apparent gunshot wounds to the head. The body was identified as that of Moreira, a plumber and resident of Lakeview Street.

While the area is known for gang affiliated activity, all accounts of Moreira say that he was never involved with that life. It was suggested that he had won a substantial amount of money, over $2000, from Boledo the night before, however, it was clarified that it was one of his friends that won the sum. Word of the winning got around and a young man attempted to rob Moreira’s friend and that is when Moreira intervened. He was targeted and murdered in an alley between Lakeview and Mayflower streets.

A number of young persons from the area were detained by police and an 18-year-old was apprehended for the murder. He is Jordan Burns, who was already in custody at the CIB office at the Queen Street Police Station and charged for murder but escaped and was on the run. ASP Alejandro Cowo told the media that he was being escorted without handcuffs when he escaped from police custody. They are dealing with the officer who was on duty at the time in an internal matter. The public was urged to be mindful that Burns was considered armed and dangerous but fortunately, Burns was recaptured on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 and is in police custody.
