David Edwardo Medina, a 29-year-old Guatemalan prisoner who was serving time at the Belize Central Prison for an immigration offense, escaped prison on July 23, 2018 but is back in custody. Medina appeared before Magistrate Emmerson Banner in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court where he was read a single charge of escaping.

In court, Medina initially pleaded not guilty and was attempting to offer an explanation but the magistrate explained that if he is pleading not guilty that there was no need for an explanation at that time. He then changed his plea to guilty and asked to explain. He said that he learned that his father’s mother had died on July 23, 2018 and that he had to get money to go look for her.

With that, Magistrate Emerson entered a not guilty plea on his behalf and since Medina is not a Belizean and is already serving time in prison, he was further remanded until November 12, 2018.
