After 30 days of lockdown, 64 person who were incarcerated as a result of a State of Emergency which was implemented in two areas in Belize City were released exactly one month after being remanded. The men who are from the George Street and Banak Street areas of Belize City were released after the legally mandated time for which they could be held in prison expired.

On Wednesday evening, specialized units of the police department made their way to the prison and transported the men back into Belize City.

It is not yet known what the next step will be as it relates to the gang zones and whether or not the state of emergency will once again be re-implemented. Under the current legislation, areas can only be place on states of emergency on 30 day periods. During this time persons can be detained for the duration of the state of emergency.
