Windell Humes, a 27-year-old resident of Caye Caulker, is the suspect who police say went into a hotel room with intent to burglarize and rape a tourist. Humes was arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Friday, January 4, 2019 where he was read a single charge of burglary with the intent to rape. He appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Emmerson Banner where he pleaded not guilty to the charge saying that the police randomly picked him up. Because there was no objection to bail, it was granted in the sum of $6,000 plus one surety of the same amount, which he was able to meet. He is due back in court on February 28, 2019.

According to a police report made by the 33-year-old Swiss national and the 21-year-old manager of Tropical Oasis Hotel, on Sunday, December 30, 2018, she was sleeping in her bed when someone touched her, causing her to wake up. He noticed a man sitting on her bed with a phone flashlight in her face. He proceeded to tell her that he was hungry, insinuating that he wanted to have sex with her. He even went on to tell her that he would be back at 9:00 a.m. the following morning. Following the incident, the victim told the hotel manager and he asked if she could identify the perpetrator. It was on their way to report the crime that she saw Humes, dressed in the same clothing.
