On Saturday, May 18, 170 riders from all walks of life took to the George Price Highway from Mile 25 to Belmopan for a 25-mile ride to raise funds for the fight against cancer. Under the theme “Stronger Together”, the ride raised $73,000.00 to support efforts to combat cancer.

A release from the CEO caucus notes that since 2016, $326,000.00 has been raised and has been channelled to the Dangriga Cancer Treatment Center and the Belize Cancer Society. Speaking at the conclusion of the ride, Dr. Ellsworth Grant, who runs the Cancer Center in Dangriga, explained that this year marks the 11th year that it has been in operation. He added that as a result of contributions from the community and organizations like the CEO caucus, access to cancer care in Belize has been greatly increased. He noted that when the center was started 10 years ago there was a 38% chance for survival for children affected by leukaemia. That figure has been taken up to a 78% survival rate. Dr. Grant pointed to a case where a five-year-old child who was battling leukaemia is now a second form student. He also mentioned that before the center, persons who were diagnosed with cervical cancer had no way of receiving treatment, now there is a survival rate of 60%.

The CEO Caucus extends special thanks to the Cycling Federation of Belize for their continued guidance and care extended to the riders and overall logistical support. Thanks also to the officers of the Belize Coast Guard, the Belize Defence Force, the Police and Transport Departments for their commitment to security and road safety.

Heartfelt appreciation also goes to the staff of the Ministries of Labour, Natural Resources, Agriculture, Health, Human Development, National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), the Solid Waste Management Authority and the Government Press Office, who volunteered their time to coordinate the event.

Thank you especially to our sponsors, our donors from the business community, our partner agencies, and each individual who personally donated and continue to support this worthy cause.

Let’s continue to honour and pledge our support to our friends and family who are braving the battle. We are stronger together!
