A 15 year-old male minor has been arrested and charged with manslaughter for the death of 8 year old Gabriela Corrales. Police say that he knocked her down and killed her.

Best information to the press is that at around 3:35 pm, on Tuesday, June 18th, 2019, Gabriela was riding her bicycle home after attending classes at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Primary School.  She was crossing a pedestrian ramp when she was hit by a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUV. It is believed that the vehicle dragged her body a short distance away from the point of the initial impact. She suffered severe head and bodily injuries, and she passed away shortly after being hit.

Reports to the press were that the driver, who was later identified as a 15 year old Guatemalan National, appeared as though he was attempting to flee the scene of the accident, but nearby drivers prevented him from leaving.

His attorney, Hurl Hamilton, has since refuted that claim to the media, saying that his client was not trying to leave the area.

The minor was arraigned on Wednesday, June 19th, 2018 in Belmopan before Senior Magistrate Merlene Moody. He was read charges of manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, driving an unlicensed vehicle, driving a motor vehicle not covered by third party risk insurance, and driving a motor vehicle while not being holder of a valid driver license.

He was granted bail in the sum of $10,000, which he was able to meet, and his case has been adjourned until a later date. While the young man is out on bail, his family has indicated that they are willing to cover the little girl’s funeral expenses.
