Justice Samuel Lungole Awich sworn inOn Thursday September 30, a special sitting of the Supreme Court was held during which Dr. Abdulai Conteh retired as Chief Justice of Belize after service for ten years and eight months. He had been appointed in 2000 and served uninterrupted in the position since then. Justice Conteh reached the retirement age of 65 in August.

On Monday October 4, Justice Samuel Lungole Awich was sworn in as acting Chief Justice. He will serve in that capacity until January 1, 2011 when the new CJ will be installed. Deadline for applications to the post has been extended to October 15.
