Brian VasquezA teenager who broke into a woman’s home on the Southside of Belize City in early June of this year and allegedly tried to rape an 8-year-old girl as she slept in her bedroom has been captured and charged with three criminal offenses.

The teenager, 19-year-old Brian Vasquez, a Construction Worker of Belize City appeared unrepresented before Senior Magistrate, Sharon Frazer in Court #2 on Monday July 4th where he was charged with attempted rape, aggravated assault of an indecent nature and burglary.

Allegations are that on June 5, he entered the home of a 33-year-old woman and tried to rape her 8 year old daughter who was asleep in another room.

Prosecutor, Sgt. Shawn Walton objected to bail on the grounds of the prevalence of the crime. He asked the court to please assist the police in combating these kinds of crimes that are being committed upon our young children by remanding the accused to prison. He added that the young child has been traumatized by the incident as she was asleep when she was allegedly woken by the defendant.

When Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer asked Vasquez to give her a good reason why she should grant him bail, Vasquez said that he is innocent of the charges and that police had picked him up for a stolen cell phone which he has since returned to the owner.  He claimed that’s when the police charged him for attempted rape.

Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer went ahead and upheld Prosecutor Walton’s objection to bail and remanded Vasquez into custody at the Belize Central Prison.

In a report to police, the child’s mother, a 33-year-old domestic told police that on June 5th, at about 2:00 a.m., she was at home, when she got up due to a toothache that was bothering her.

She said that when she went to use the bathroom, she heard her daughter crying out loud and that’s when she approached her and asked her if she was dreaming. The young child told her that somebody had been lying on top her. The child further told her mother that when she open her eyes, she saw that it was “Biggs”, someone she knew well.

According to the child, she pushed “Biggs” from off her and that’s when he got on his knees and began to fondle himself.  The child told her mother that “Biggs” placed his hand into his pants front and then began to touch her inappropriately on her private parts. It was not until the child began to cry out louder that her attacker ran out of the room and through the house’s front door.

When police processed the scene, they observed that the culprit had gained entry into the home by removing some board lovers from the child’s window.

The case of Brian Vasquez was adjourned for August 13th.
