On Monday, July 11th, the Ministry of Health collaborated with the Belize Social Security Board and Rotary International to hand over 9 new mobile dental units to the Belize Dental Health Department. The units will be used primarily in rural areas to provide quality services of international standards to residents of those communities. The units are fully equipped and will enable dentists to perform a range of services; from basic cleaning to minor operations. The total number of mobile units in the dental department’s mobile outreach program is 11.

At the handing over ceremony inside the Radisson Fort George Hotel, Dr. Peter Allen, C.E.O. in the Ministry of Health, said that it is something that he wanted to see done for over 20 years. Minister of Health, Hon. Pablo Marin, said that all residents of Belize deserve quality dental services. The time when dental health is focused on tooth extraction only is over. Quality dental care means putting emphasis on dental education and greater access to dental services. The Minister stressed the importance of providing care and tools to prevent dental infections. This means that everyone must be responsible for their own dental health. Dr. Allen said the first thing that needs to be done is reducing the sugar and processed foods in our diet. These continue to be the greatest contributors to our dental woes.
