He is accused of trying to rape a 14 year-old boy in the Village of San Jose Succotz on Thursday, July 21st, sometime after 9 p.m. Before he was handed over to the police, he was caught and severely beaten by the villagers for trying to violate the young man.

Cumberbatch is known to the villagers of Succotz as the man who can assist with getting birth certificates. They told the media that he came to the village several times to assist other people with their personal documents.

According to the mother of the 14 year-old, she didn’t know Cumberbatch before the incident; she needed two birth certificates for two of her children. She contacted him earlier in the day, and they decided that he would provide the service for $50.

She said that he went back to her house with her at around 7:30 p.m.; she then provided him with the documents and the money. He asked that her 14 year-old son walk with him back to the entrance of the village because he didn’t know the way.

She said that she didn’t think anything of it, so she allowed her son to walk him out. She said that she saw 10 – 15 minutes pass, and she became worried, so she and 2 of her younger children went to go look for him. That’s when they found the man with his pants down, and he was holding onto her son’s hand trying to pull his pants down as well.

She reportedly shouted after them, and that’s when the man quickly fixed up his clothes and pretended that nothing happened. She said that she told the man that she had intentions to report him to the police.

The teen told the media that during those 15 minutes he was with Cumberbatch, he tried to convince him to perform sexual acts by offering gifts. Cumberbatch reportedly fondled him, and pulled down his own pants. A few minutes later, before Cumberbatch could make any more moves, his mother interrupted him.

The mother and son went off to make a report to the police, but by that time, the message of what Cumberbatch had tried to do spread to the rest of the village.

While the mother and son were giving written statements to the police, one of the officers answered a telephone call. They were informed that the villagers banded together, went to look for Cumberbatch, and found him behind a church. He was badly beaten and tied up; he remained that way until police came and picked him up.

Police in San Ignacio took the young man to the hospital. A doctor performed a medical exam on the young man, and based on the results, along with the statements, they decided to charge Cumberbatch.

After his arraignment, he was released on bail.
