A husband and wife were detained by police on the night of Saturday July 23rd after they were accused of child neglect. They are accused of leaving their 10-year-old disabled female child locked up inside their home in the Holy Emmanuel area of Saint Martin’s de Pores area of Belize City.
The couple,47-year-old Albert Gentle and 32-year-old Domestic Diana Gentle, was arraigned on Monday July 25th on a single charge of child neglect. They appeared unrepresented in Court #2 before Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer where they both pleaded not guilty to the charge and bail was offered in the sum of $1,500.00 plus one surety of the same amount.
The couple is accused of leaving their disabled child, a 10-year-old female alone inside their home on Saturday July 23rd, at about 9:30 a.m.
Police were alerted of the situation that morning after they got an anonymous call from a concerned citizen. They immediately visited the area along with Social Services Personnel and on their way to the home, they met Diana, the child’s mother. She was taken to her home, where police observed that a padlock was on the outside of the main front door. When it was opened, they found the 10-year-old child, who is disabled lying on a bed. There were no opened windows and the child was all alone.
The mother was found on Raccoon Street while the father was found at about 1:45 a.m. on Sunday morning socializing on Lacroix Boulevard in front of a shop in the company of some male friends. He told police that he had gone to work. At the time of his arrest, he had no idea where his wife and child were.
The child has been removed from the home and placed in a child care center.
The couple is due back in Court #2 on September 27th.
