Aspiring Councilors and 1st week program participants.A group of aspiring town councilors is not waiting for the March election to make an impact on their community. Carlos “Charlie” Slusher, Carlos Peralta, Albert Dawson, Lionel Palacio, Fiona Mazier, Francine Burns and Mayoral candidate, Ivan Leiva, are holding a summer jobs program for youths in Orange Walk Town. The program is a two week initiative in which 210 youths will be involved in civic pride campaigns. That means any task from community cleaning to public information sharing. The group is divided into two groups of 105. The first group completed their assignments on Friday, July 29th, and made their way to the Orange Walk Town Hall to collect a stipend of 0 each. The second group will complete its assignments on Friday, August 5th, and will receive a similar stipend.

The aspiring town councilors and mayor are working in partnership with the current town council to execute the project. The councilors said that the goal of the program is to get the youths involved in their community and inject a spirit of civic pride into them. The stipend is to help them purchase back to school supplies. Charlie Slusher says that the team plans to regularize such programs when elected to handle the affairs of the town.
