Jose CortezThirty eight year old Salvadoran national Jose Cortez was detained by police on Sunday August 8th following allegations made by a 10 year old girl.

Cortez appeared before Chief Magistrate Margaret GabbMckenzie where he was read a single charge of aggravated assault of an indecent nature upon a 10-year-old child.   In court Cortez’s matter was dealt with “in camera” where he pleaded not guilty to the charge, he was unrepresented.  Objection to bail was made by the prosecutor, Sgt. Egbert Castillo due to the sensitive nature of the offense and bail was denied to Cortez and he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until September 11th.

Before he was arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, Cortez was first taken to the Belize Family court to first answer to charges in that court.

A 10 year old girl visited the police station on Sunday, August 7th in Belize City where she reported to police that Cortez touched her inappropriately on her private parts.
