On Friday August 12th, the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions withdrew charges against two Belize City men who have been remanded at the Hattieville prison for almost a year. The men, 21-year-old Akeem Humes and 21-year-old Ryan Alvarez were charge in September 2010 for the murder of Jason Michael Flores which occurred on December 9th during a shooting on Kraal Road in Belize City.

The men appeared in Magistrate’s Court before Chief Magistrate Margaret Gabb Mckenzie where prosecutor Sgt. Carol Tucker made the announcement. The Chief Magistrate had reservations however, as there was no memo with that directive coming from the DPP. The matter was adjourned until the afternoon when the directive was submitted in writing and the men were free to go.

Flores, a laborer of the area was heading to work on December 9th at about 7:30 a.m., when he was shot several times allegedly by a lone gunman.

Police first charged Ryan Alvarez in April of 2010, 4 months after Flores was murdered. Akeem Humes was not charged until September 27th, 9 months after the murder of Flores.

The parents of both men were present in court and said that the police knew from the start of their investigation that they had no evidence against their sons. Humes’ mother said that her son spent 2 of his birthdays behind bars while Alvarez’s mother said her son spent one birthday behind bars.
