Belize's starting squadBelize’s World Cup Qualifier match against Guatemala kicked off at the Foot Ball Federation of Belize Stadium in Belmopan. In true world cup fashion it started with the FIFA and CONCACAF flags displayed at center field as the national an them for Guatemala was played followed by Belize’s National anthem.

After the formalities of team handshakes the game started at 4:08 p.m. in a packed stadium with a capacity of 3 thousand Belizean and Guatemalan spectators Belize defended the home turf on the western end of the pitch.

The game got off to a sluggish start for the home team as they gave up their first goal at the first 5 minutes of play. That one came from the Guatemalan’s squad captain Gustavo Cabrera who capitalized from a corner kick with a header into goal. Belize’s performance continued very much the same way in the first half with close ball handling and Guatemala taking the offensive in the first half but with Shane Orio, team captain for Belize and goal keeper fending off the Guatemalan’s attempts on goal. At the end of that first period the game was 1-0 in favor of Guatemala.

At the beginning of the second half there was a substitution for Belize’s team as well as the Guatemalan team and it paid off for the visitors as 32 minutes into the game the Guatemalan substitution Minor Lopez cutting past the Belize defender Vallan Symms for a score putting Guatemala at a 2-0 advantage. 15 seconds after that goal Belize responded with a professional goal by Deon McCauley outdoing the Guatemalan man on the field and firing the goal and energizing the team and Belizean fans. Belize would keep up the pressure on Guatemala for the remainder of the game but to no avail. Guatemala attempted to kill time to prevent Belize’s comeback forcing the referee to give a Guatemalan player a yellow card. The game remained at a 2-0 score and ended like that.

This game comes after an impressive win over Greneda on Friday September 2nd when Belize defeated that team by a score of 3-0.

Greneda will have its return match against Belize on October 7th at the FFB stadium. Belize’s return match against Guatemala will take place on October 11th in Guatemala. The Team will then play St. Vincent and the Grenedines on November 11th at the FFB Stadium and on the 15th of November the return match will be played in St. Vincent.
