George Cadle PriceBelize’s first Prime Minister, George Cadle Price, died after injuries he sustained during a fall. Price was at his Pickstock Street home on Wednesday September 14th when he fell and injured his head. He was rushed to the Belize Healthcare Partners where he underwent surgery to remove a blood clot he developed as a result of the fall and remained at the hospital in an induced coma up until 6:30a.m. on Monday September 19th when he died.

George price was 92 years old.He was born on January 15th, 1919. He was a graduate of Holy Redeemer Primary School, St. John’s College and St. Augustine Minor Seminary in Mississippi where he studied theology; he further studied at Seminario Conciliar in Guatemala.

He first ran in electoral politics in 1944 at the municipal level. He would later win his first election in 1947 and served as the Mayor of Belize City from 1958 to 1962. Price was the leader of the People’s United Party from 1956 to 1996. He became First Minister on April 7th, 1961 and Premier on January 1st, 1964. Through Price, Belize attained independence on September 21st, 1981 becoming Belize’s First Prime Minister.
