Nine year-old Joshua Abraham, who lived near the Victoria Street zone, was murdered on Independence Day sometime after 12 p.m. His murder marred what would have been a joyous celebration of Belize’s 30th Anniversary of Independence for residents of Victoria Street. Police have detained and charged two men for his murder.

Joshua went out to watch the annual uniform parade that passes by the intersection of Victoria Street and North Front Street. About 30 minutes after the parade had passed, he went to a nearby store, and that’s when two men approached the area from the intersection of New Road and Victoria Street.  The men hid behind a few parked vehicles.

Joshua was returning to his neighbor’s house and that’s when the two men sprayed the area with bullets. The gunmen retreated almost immediately after they had shot up the area, and they escaped.
Joshua ran and tried to get out of the way of the bullets, but one of them struck him in the left rib cage. He ran into the yard of one of the residents, and he collapsed.

The resident placed him into a vehicle and transported him, and his mother, to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. He bled out before the doctors could begin to try to save his life.

Two men were arraigned in Magistrate’s court for his murder. 25 year-old Construction Worker, Randy Green, of a Kelly Street address along with Michael “Boots” Young, 22, an unemployed of Hunter’s Alley in Belize City, appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Dorothy Flowers.

Due to the nature of the crime, they were not eligible for bail, and no plea was taken. They’ve been remanded to Belize Central Prison until November 10th, 2011, their next court date.

Both men alleged police brutality when they were taken into custody. They continued that after they were beaten, police refused to allow them to receive medical attention. As a result, Magistrate Flowers ordered that they be taken to the hospital immediately to be treated for any injuries.

Abraham is believed to have been an innocent bystander in an ongoing rivalry between Victoria Street, and Kelly Street.
