Leon AugustOn August 3, 2011, at around 8:30 p.m., Leon Richards August, 26, and two minors became the victims of gun violence at a residence in Orange Walk Town. The two minors were hospitalized due to their injuries, but one of them remains in critical condition.

Residents told the media that August, and a 13 and 14 year-old minor were socializing at a house on Royal Palm Street. They were ambushed by a bicycle-riding gunman who entered the premises, which was located on the second flat of the house, and fired 5 or 6 shots at the trio.

Bullets struck August in the neck and chest, he went down after being hit several times. The 13 year-old suffered wounds to the neck and upper left arm, and the 14 year old received injuries to the right arm.

The gunman took off down the steps and rode off into the night. August was rushed to the Northern Regional Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries before he arrived. The 13 year-old remains in critical condition; he had to be transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for further treatment.

The 14 year-old reportedly has been treated and released.

This attack in this neighborhood has been viewed as very strange and random; August had no known enemies, and he was a hard-worker. It was reported to the media that he aspired to become a professional mechanic.
