Returning from Panama City on Thursday, 29th September, after spending three days participating in the CENTRAL AMERICAN SEMINAR WORKSHOP on AFRODESCENDANTS  were  Cynthia Pitts, Ombusman;  Roy Cayetano from the NGC; and Myrna Manzanares from the NKC. Also participating was Dr. Francisco Roquette, Assistant Resident Representative from UNDP Belize.

This seminar/workshop was organized by the Regional Office of the High Commission for Human Rights in Central Americato foster dialogue among stakeholders of Central American countries and identify possible actions to coordinate regional and national agendas in order to eliminate gaps in the effective exercise of the rights of Afro-descendants. This seminar coincides with the International Year of Afro-descentsdeclared by the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 64/169 of March, 2010.

The seminar workshop was funded by the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development as part of a two year project, whose objective is to promote and strengthen the rights of Afro descendant populations nationally and internationally through the empowerment of four key factors-

Afro-descendant civil society organizations, National human rights institutions Racial equality mechanisms(where they exist) United Nations System entities.

The Belizean contingent will be working on further examining the realities of Afro-descendants in Belize with a view to developing strategies and promoting concerted action, involving relevant organizations, aimed at addressing the challenges confronted by this sector of the population.
