Mario Cunil and Leslie GrinageAt 12:30 a.m. on Monday, October 17th, 2011,  police stopped a Toyota Hilux pick-up truck as it was going contrary to the flow of traffic on Vernon Street. The vehicle was being driven by San Ignacio resident, Leslie Grinage, and he was accompanied by 19-year-old Mario Cunil of Arenal Village.

A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 4 parcels of marijuana found stashed underneath the vehicle in the area where the spare wheel is kept. The parcels were wrapped inside a black plastic bag. Grinage and Cunil were arrested and taken to the police station where the parcels were examined. Results proved that it was 1,814.4 grams of marijuana.

They appeared before Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer on Monday, October 17, to answer to a charge of drug trafficking. In Court, Cunil told the Magistrate that he met Grinage in Cayo and asked him for a ride to Belize City. He claimed that Grinage had no idea the marijuana was under the truck and said that it was his stash.   Cunil was slapped with a $10,000 fine and imposed a 3 year jail term for his guilty plea.

Though Cunil took the rap, the charge of drug trafficking was not withdrawn from Grinage since he is the owner of the vehicle. Leslie Grinage was offered bail of $8,000 and is due back in Court on December 5th.  Grinage was unable to meet bail and was remanded to prison until he can do so.
