Ernest StaineA second man has been charged for the murder of Mennonite businessman, Wendell Reimer which occurred on October 7th at Mile 4 ½ on the Northern Highway. On Friday October 28th Ernest Staine, 21, was arraigned in Magistrate’s Court before Chief Magistrate Ann Marie Smith where he was read two charges - one count of murder in the shooting death of Reimer and one count of robbery. 

When he appeared in court he was read allegations that on October 7th he along with Nicholas Swazo robbed the sum of $300 from Carmencita Eck, which was the property of Eagle 1 Hardware.   The Chief Magistrate told Staine that since murder is an indictable crime, no plea will be taken. No plea was take for the robbery charge either as it  stems from the same incident.  She explained to him that the charges will be dealt with on indictment and that bail cannot be offered. Staine was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until November 11th, where he joins 24-year-old Nicholas Swazo a resident of #19 Yampa Street, Dangriga Town who is also on remand for the murder of Reimer. Both men are to reappear in court on the same date.

On Friday, October 7th, at about 1:00 p.m., three men stormed unto the premises of Eagle 1 Hardware located at Mile 4 ½ on the Northern Highway.  Police reports are that the men entered the store and began to inquiry into specific items. When Reimer realized that they were going to rob him he decided to run for his life but was gunned down by his attacker, who in the middle of ordering items, pulled out a firearm and fired shots in his direction. Reimer was shot twice as he ran.  He fell to the ground and died on the spot from his injuries. Staine was detain in Belize City on Wednesday, October 26th.
