Mark LozanoIn a very senseless shooting on Monday night, March 19, 2012, a woman was shot and injured by a lone gunman; while a mechanic was killed just seconds after that first shooting, by the same gunman.

In a report by police, they identified the shooting victims as Cheray Zetina, a domestic worker of Belize City and murder victim, Mark Lozano, 47, a mechanic and resident of Ladyville, Belize District.

The information we gathered from police and residents of the area suggest that Zetina was standing on Balan Street in Belize City, in front of a house along with her boyfriend when a gunman, riding on a bicycle, approached the couple and then fired a single bullet in their direction.

The bullet hit Zetina to her left upper arm; it journeyed through her left breast and exited the center of her back. During the rush to get her medical attention at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, Lozano was also shot yards away.

The gunman remained on his bicycle after shooting Zetina and rode toward McKay Boulevard; Lozano was also on McKay Boulevard walking at the time.  It is unclear what triggered the gunman at this point, but a resident explained that both Lozano and the gunman saw each other.

Lozano, who was holding food in his hands, was shot in the left upper arm; the bullet exited his neck.  He succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.

There has been no arrest in this latest shooting/murder and police say that their investigation continues.

Zetina, we understand from sources, is now stable at the KHMH, after being in a critical condition.

Residents told us that Lozano was a hardworking mechanic, who never interfered with other people and he didn’t deserve to die.
