Yolanda ShackaronOn Friday March 30th ,Yolanda Shackaron failed in her bid to have her election petition heard at the Supreme Court. The Chief Justice ruled that her application for leave for an election petition would not be allowed.

Despite being given every indication that her attempt would fail, Shackron was being misled to believe that her petition would stand a chance in court. It turns out that she was wrong.  After having the matter decided on Nomination Day, February 17th, in the court of Justice Oswell Legall, Shackron thought she had a chance at an election petition. She was wrong and the Chief Justice refused to give her leave for an election petition to proceed.

That now puts and end to her attempt. At the time of her disqualification from running, she was a U.S. national and she held a U.S. passport. Under Belize’s Constitution, no one with dual nationality can run for area representative in any division. She simply did not understand this and told the nation that she had begun the process to give up her U.S. citizenship. When asked after the court hearing on Friday whether she had completed the process, she said that was not important. In effect, she did not answer the question yet there are Belizeans who want to know: has Shackron given up her U.S. citizenship?
