Delegation of the Ministerial meeting held in Washington, DCFollowing a meeting between delegations from Belize’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its Guatemalan counterparts, a date was finalized for referenda to be held in both countries.

On April 27th, Belize’s delegation represented by Hon. Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Attorney General of Belize; H.E. Senior Ambassador Alfredo Martinez; Ambassador Nestor Mendez; Ambassador Lisa Shoman and First Secretary Kendall Belisle met with Harold Caballeros, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala and his team at the Organization of American States Headquarters in Washington.  The meeting was held with OAS Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza, to determine the date on which the simultaneous single issue referenda will take place in both countries.

According to a release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting was cordial and cooperative and it was agreed that the simultaneous referenda will take place on October 6th, 2013. The release goes on to explain that necessary steps will now begin in both countries to inform the populations on the territorial dispute as well as to the need to find a peaceful and permanent solution to the differendum.

The release continued to explain that the Ministers also agreed that they would convene a high-level meeting during the month of June to examine compliance with the confidence-building measures, as well as to identify activities directed at strengthening cooperation between the inhabitants of the Belize-Guatemala Adjacency Zone.
