The scene of the most recent shooting incident that claimed two livesOver the past few weeks, there have been a number of shooting incidents outside of nightclubs in Belize City and as a result, at least 3 people have lost their lives. Being responsive to the nature of crime in Belize City, The City Council and The Police Department have teamed up to discontinue the practice of issuing liquor license extension sto these establishments.

In his 100-day report, Mayor Darrell Bradley explained that the issue of giving liquor licenses to establishments had become a practice that in reality goes contrary to law. It was that an establishment simply had to apply and it would be granted an extension. That practice is contrary to law as nightclubs only receive licenses to operate up to 2a.m. The issue of granting extensions only apply for establishment when they have a special event and those establishments must be sound-proof. Many of those establishments that were in the past issued extensions did not meet the criteria. Even so however, the extensions will now be discontinued altogether and the initiative will be backed by The Police Department in an effort to ensure that people are out on the streets for shorter periods of time.
