Belize City resident, Anthony Thomas Welcome, 24, is expected to be charged with drug trafficking following an incident that allegedly transpired on Sunday in Benque Viejo del Carmen. Police say they found more than fifty pounds of cannabis in total.

The incident occurred at around 6:30 a.m., in the Lomas Del Rodeo area while police were on patrol. Reportedly, police noticed a grey Nissan Frontier travelling towards them. When the SUV got at about fifty yards from the police, the driver stopped.

The driver and Welcome fled leaving the vehicle behind. Welcome, was caught carrying a red sack, which he later disposed of.

The police managed to capture Welcome and then took him back to where he had initially thrown the sack.

The sack was opened and found inside were three black plastic bags wrapped in brown tape that contained green leafy substances suspected to be cannabis.
Thereafter, Welcome was informed of the offence committed and arrested.

Further checks inside the Nissan Frontier led police to discover three additional black plastic bags also wrapped in brown tape that contained green leafy substance.
Welcome, the vehicle, and the drugs were taken to the Benque Viejo Police Station.

Police confiscated a total of 55 ½ lbs. of cannabis.
