Hon. John Saldivar visits Cadet Corps Summer On Friday, July 20th July, Minister of National Security, Hon. John Saldivar, made a special visit to the grounds of the 2012 BDF Youth Cadet Corps Summer Camp, being held in the Cayo District on the campus of the Eden Seventh Day Adventist High School in Santa Elena.

The Summer Camp is an annual event held for members of the BDF Youth Cadet Corps. This year, as many as 203 cadets from around the country are attending the summer camp in Cayo, which started last Saturday, July 14 and ended on Saturday, July 21.

In his address, Hon. Saldivar congratulated the youths, encouraging them to continue doing well in school and to keep on setting a good example for other youths. He asked that each of them make an effort to influence at least one other youth to join the Cadet Corps and follow their lead.

He also thanked the organizers and emphasized how important it is, in these challenging times, that the youths are recruited into such constructive programs before the criminals get a chance to recruit them into their destructive gangs.

The invitation was extended to Minister Saldivar by Lieutenant Colonel Felix Enriquez, Commander BDF Volunteer Battalion, under whose command the BDF Youth Cadet Corps falls. He said their purpose for inviting the Minister was to give him an overview of the progress being made so he can determine how to assist them to build on their success.

So impressed was Minister Saldivar with the success of the program that he made a commitment to organizers that he would ensure that additional resources are secured to expand the size of the Cadet Corps, doubling its membership to 1,000 over the next two to three years.

The BDF Youth Cadet Corps was started in 2008, and its membership has since grown to 500. Each year, the Annual Summer Camp is held in a different District. 2008 was in Corozal, 2009 in Belmopan, 2010 in Dangriga, and 2011 in Orange Walk. Next year’s camp is scheduled to be held in Toledo.

Also present during the activities were Deputy Commander of the BDF, Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Ortega, as well as Police Superintendent, Chester Williams, who is the Officer in Charge of the Cayo District.
