40-year-old Stevedore Ian Madrill fell nearly 30 feet to his death at around 3:15 a.m. on Tuesday, July 31. Madrill and Deon Pitter were on a 40 ft spreader that was being used to load a cargo ship called the MV Kappeln.  According to reports, the men were on top of the spreader as it was being used to carry a 40 ft flat rack by a crane. The spreader bumped against the MV Kappeln and the flat rack loosened. That caused the men and the flat rack to fall nearly 30 ft into the cargo hole. Both men were rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Ian Madrill suffered from head and body injuries and was pronounced dead at 4:40 a.m. while Deon Pitter received injuries to his right elbow and right thigh. It is believe that Pitter was able to maneuver his fall because he had a hold of the chain that connected the flat rack.

The Port of Belize Limited has pledged to assist the families of both victims in any way possible. The company will implement policies to make the working environment safer for all stevedores.
