According to police reports, four civilians were shot by Dangriga police officers on Thursday, August 30th. Three officers of the Dangriga Police Station reported that they responded to reports of an aggravated burglary in Steadfast Village at about 7:25 p.m. on Thursday. After conducting initial investigations into that incident, the officers left for the police station. On their way back they saw a black Toyota pick-up truck parked in the middle of the road near mile 15 on the Hummingbird Highway. As soon as the police vehicle approached, the truck sped off recklessly into a nearby road. Police pursued the truck until it stopped at the driver’s home.

Police then searched the vehicle and saw that the driver, Erasmus Castellanos, was drinking a Belikin Beer. A bottle of bitters was also found on the floor of the vehicle and $2,155 was found on the driver. Police then informed the driver that he was being arrested for Reckless Driving and Driving under the Influence of Alcohol. It was then that the driver’s brother shouted that no one will arrest his brother or they will have to deal with the entire family. The driver got bold after that statement and shouted that no one will arrest him tonight or they will have to kill his entire family and he will then kill them. Soon after, additional family members arrived at the residence in an attempt to protect Erasmus. The officers reported that at least 18 individuals surrounded them. The brother that started the resistance started to advance towards the officers with a machete at this time. The officers instructed him to stop but he continued to advance in an attack stance. In an effort to protect himself, the officer fired two shots at the hostile individual. He dropped the machete to the ground after sustaining gunshot injuries to his lower abdomen.

This angered the family even more and the entire group advanced towards the three officers. The two officers that had not drawn their weapons were grappled by Castellanos’ relatives. They were held around their necks and struggled to avoid chop wounds. The officer that had his weapon drawn was not grappled as yet and had time to fire two more shots. The family members immediately discontinued their advancement and the officers were released. 30-year-old Erasmus Castellanos was shot below the right knee; 24-year-old Lucero Castellanos was shot in the right leg; 26-year-old Roberto Neal was shot in the left knee and 32-year-old Isidro Castellanos was shot in the lower abdomen. They all sought medical attention at the Southern Regional Hospital. All were treated and released except for Isidro Castellanos, who was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for further treatment.

All four men that were shot are expected to be charged. Erasmus Castellanos will be charged with Reckless Driving, Driving under the Influence of Alcohol, Threatening Words Resisting arrest and three counts of Aggravated Assault.  Isidoro Castellanos will be charged with Aggravated Assault upon a Police Officer, Threatening Words and Obstruction of Justice. Lucero Castellanos will be charged with two counts of Aggravated Assault upon a Police Officer, Threat of Death, Obstruction of Justice and Damage to Property. Roberto Neal will be charged with three counts of Aggravated Assault and one count Obstruction of Justice.
