Rosalia Rooxana Navas BajilThe startling news that a jovial ten-year-old student had been found hanging from a tree, on Thursday, August 30th, in the village of San Lazaro, Orange Walk District, spread quickly.

At around 10:00a.m., on Thursday, the recently promoted STD 3 student, Rosalia Roxana Navas Bijil, had reportedly left the company of her mother and three siblings, who were in the house watching television.

As it is usual for Bijil, to venture into the back portion of the yard, where two fully grown almond trees stand, the unsuspecting family could have never imagined that death was looming.

Moments later, Bijil’s mother called out for her, but there was no response. The unsuspecting mother approached the side door, only to view Bijil hanging from one of the trees with what we were told was a clothes line around her neck.

Family members who were close by rushed to the area, where with the help of another uncle, the rope was cut and she was brought in the house and laid on the bed, but all attempts to revive her were futile.

Bijil was then rushed to the Northern Regional hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

According to police, the body had marks around the neck when it arrived at the Northern Regional hospital.

Bijil’s uncle stipulated that this is not a case of suicide, but rather an unfortunate accident. He said Bijil was not a problem child nor had she shown suicidal signs.

As a matter of fact, he told us that Bijil and her siblings were enthusiastic over the re-opening of classes, where she would have now advanced to STD 4.

The uncle could not accept that a contented Bijil committed suicide, nor did some of the neighbors, who had nothing but good things to say about her.

On Saturday, Bijil was laid to rest. The family is presently coping with the incident and has since cut the two trees, as it was a haunting reminder of what had transpired that morning.

Bijil would have turned 11 years old on September 15.
