The 78th Belize City Senior Female Softball Competition came to an end at Rogers Stadium, the home of softball in Belize, in a dramatic finish between the National Softball Champions of Belize and the defending Belize City champions Telemedia, and the National Sub-Champions and budding Belize City champions Mirage Lady Rebels. Friday night’s game was the fourth game in the best of five series, with Mirage Lady Rebels enjoying a 2-1 lead over its nemesis Telemedia, who was in a must-win situation.

Mirage Lady Rebels, batting in the bottom of the 1st inning, wasted no time in going to work against Telemedia’s starter and loser Mary Flowers. Mirage Lady Rebels’ centre fielder, Marsha Cassasola opened the inning with a single to left field; she then advanced to second base on a Mary Flowers’ wild pitch. Cassasola further advanced to third base on a sharply hit ball to centre field by the third baseman, Lisa Jones. Cassasola scored the 1st run of the game when she scored on an infield hit by catcher Ashanti Anderson.

The second run of the game was scored by third baseman Lisa Jones, who had reached earlier on a sharp single to centre field, on a sacrifice fly to right field by first baseman, Sherette Jones. Catcher Ashanti Anderson, who reached on an infield hit, then scored the third run of the game on right fielder Clarencia Jones’ double to left field.

Meanwhile, the pitching of Mirage Lady Rebels’ starter and winner Lanisha Jones was able to keep the potent bats of Telemedia, at bay for the most part of the game. Telemedia batting in the top of the 3rd inning, was able to score a single run, when with two outs, third baseman Norecia Frazier drilled a Lanisha Jones fastball over the left fielder’s head for a double. She later scored on pitcher Mary Flowers’ single to centre field.

In the top of the 5th inning, Telemedia scored 2 more runs when first baseman Earlene Belisle opened the inning with a triple to centre field and then scored on a Lanisha Jones wild pitch. This was then followed by centre fielder Lydia Cacho reaching second base on a throwing error by pitcher Lanisha Jones on a bunted ball that she had to field. Cacho later scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by right fielder Barbara Cadle.

With the score even at 3-3, Mirage Lady Rebels, in the bottom of the 6th inning and with two outs, staged a rally that was fueled by second baseman Mertell Bailey’s ball that was hit into right field. That bounced pass the right fielder Barbara Cadle that ended up turning into a double. Telemedia’s pitcher Mary Flowers then hit batsman Vennise Dawson on that next pitch to put runners on 1st and 2nd bases. Flowers then unleashed her 2nd wild pitch of the game to push runners up to 2nd and 3rd bases.  Mirage Lady Rebels then scored the go-ahead and winning runs when centre fielder Marsha Cassasola reached on shortstop Elaine Humes’ third fielding error of the game, which gave Mirage Lady Rebels the 5-3 victory and the 2012 championship.

On the line for Mirage Lady Rebels were 5 runs on 7 hits and 3 errors, while for Telemedia it was 3 runs on 6 hits and 3 errors.
