KHMH employees sing, dance and eatHealth centers across the country will be hosting events such as staff clinics, sporting competitions, exercise classes and dance lessons throughout this week as Belize joins the rest of CARICOM in celebrating Caribbean Wellness Week. This year, Caribbean Wellness Week is being celebrated from September 23rd to 29th.

Caribbean Wellness Day was declared as a commemoration of a CARICOM landmark summit and is celebrated on the second Saturday in September each year. A commitment was made among Caribbean countries, including Belize, to acknowledge and reduce the epidemic of chronic non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure which rank amongst the highest in the region.

This year, the focus will be on promoting healthy workplaces and schools under the theme “Healthy Children, Healthy Schools”. The Ministry and the health regions across the country have planned activities for their staff during this week. The Northern Region will have various health talk sessions throughout the week and a Fun Day on Friday, September 28th. Western Regional Hospital will be having a health fair in the community of Las Flores on September 29th. Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital did a walkathon on Wednesday, September 26th with staff and their usual bike ride on Monday, October 1st, from KHMH to the Haulover Bridge and back.

Activities in other regions across the country include health fairs and health sessions in the hospitals and also in the communities. The Ministry has also invited schools, private organizations, Government offices, and other Non-Governmental Organizations to participate in wellness activities during this week.
