Police have arrested a known burglar in connection with the aggravated burglary of the home of Stephen and Ursula Patnett Lewis on Monday, October 1st.

Police visited a two-storey house in Maya Mopan Extension, Belmopan City where they saw the motionless body of 53-year-old Stephen Lewis. Initial investigation revealed that Lewis was at home with his wife Ursula when they were attacked by a mask wearing intruder. The man tied up the wife inside her room upstairs and went to locate her husband downstairs.  Stephen was in the couple’s theatre room. According to Ursula, she heard her husband shouting for help then went silent a few minutes after. While the intruder was downstairs attacking her husband, she was able to free herself and eventually jumped off a balcony from the second floor of the house. She was injured as a result of the 15-ft fall but still managed to alert the neighbours for help. Unfortunately, by the time a neighbor responded it was too late to save her husband or even apprehend the culprit.

The man escaped but left behind traces of blood from an apparent cut to the hand. Blood stains were found near six windows of the house through which the intruder was trying to escape. He eventually jumped off the same balcony as Ursula, hopped the fence and escaped from the area. Stephen Lewis was transported to the Western Regional Hospital. He suffered from multiple stab wounds to the upper part of the body and died as a result.

Lewis had recently relocated to Belize after living in the United States for most of his life. Despite concerns about the increase in violence in a society he once knew as a haven, he convinced his wife that home was where they should be to enjoy their later years. Unfortunately, he personified most Belizean-Americans’ greatest fear - the fear that their home coming could turn tragic in what is a much more violent country than they left twenty plus years ago.

On Tuesday, October 2nd, police reported that they had arrested one individual for the murder of Stephen Lewis. He was captured in Cayo and is a known burglar to police. The individual also has an injured thumb.
