In late July, Brighton and his young nephew, 7, had been playing under their house, when it suddenly collapsed trapping them under it.

Neighbors were quick to assist and were able to pull the boys from under the rubble. Both were transported to the Northern Regional Hospital (NRH), where the nephew was treated for foot injuries and was later released.

Brighton, though, who witnesses at the scene said appeared dead, was transported from the NRH to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, in a critical condition. It was soon learned that Brighton had suffered a punctured lung and a cardiac arrest.

Roughly three weeks later, he was released from the KHMH. There was not much doctors could do, but the family would not give up so easily.

Over the weeks, the family, through fund raising and donations, was able to take Brighton to Chetumal, Quintana Roo. The purpose of the visit was to commence therapy, but doctors there also concluded that they couldn’t do much for him either.

Nearly four months after the lamentable incident, on Thursday, November 1st, only four days after moving into his new home constructed by the Belize Bank Limited along with Hand in Hand Ministries, Brighton passed away.

His mother told us that she didn’t expect his passing, but that he had held on enough. “Though painful, the pain is lessened by the comfort of knowing he is no longer suffering”, she explained.

According to the family Brighton died of pneumonia due to an infection.

Brighton leaves behind four brothers and five sisters.
