COMPOLIncoming Commissioner of Police, Allan Whylie announced at a press conference called by the Prime Minister, Hon. Dean Barrow on Tuesday, January 8th that the police department will be undergoing some major changes in the coming weeks.

Commissioner Whylie explained that within the next few days the authority of the police department will be decentralized with a number of precincts being created across the. This will be done to have “better command and control” of the city and be able to increase the number of personnel that are on the ground for patrols. According to Whylie, this decentralization will also reduce the response time to crime in various areas. Each of the precincts that will be established will be “fully contained to provide 100% policing services.”  More than just having more policemen on the ground; however, Commissioner Whylie said that detectives will also be assigned to the various precincts. Additionally, he said that as a result of the decentralization, commanders of the various areas will have greater contact and interaction with the community in which they serve to develop better relationships with the public.
