Sixth Suspect in Robbery of Chinese grocer remanded Print E-mail

JeanOn Friday, February 15th, the last of 6 suspects who police said they caught inside a grocery store in mid-January, after a robbery of Jian Vin Shop on Mopan Street, was charged in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court.

He is 19-year-old Jean Pascual, a resident of #8445 Cannondale Drive and a student of ITVET evening division. Pascual was released a day earlier from the KHMH after being shot in his foot. When he appeared in court on Friday, he was charged with robbery and keeping an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

He is still recovering from his injuries and as a result, had to use a crutch as support as he was escorted into Court to appear before the Senior Magistrate, Sharon Frazer.

Pascual was unrepresented and he pleaded not guilty to all charges. Due to the nature of the offenses, he was denied bail and remanded to the Belize Central Prison where he now joins three others already charged along with two minors for the same robbery.

Those were previously charged are 18-year-old Alexis Ku, a butcher of Mahogany Street Extension; 35-year-old tour guide of San Pedro, Steven Swasey; Gregory Knox, as well as two minors 16 and 17.

The first three were arraigned on Monday, January 14th, 2013, days after the robbery.

Knox was arraigned on Friday, February 15th. He too had been shot during the robbery as well as Ku and two others.

On Saturday, January 12th, 2013, Chinese businessman, 62-year-old Jian Guang Li, and his wife, 33-year-old Chan Yan Chu, were inside their store, Jian Vin Shop lcoated at #10 Cor. Mahogany and Mopan Streets, when a group of 6 men entered and demanded money.

As a result of the armed hold up, Li handed over to his attackers, $2,500 in cash, a DVD Player along with a Laptop computer used to sell Boledo. Police quickly responded to the robbery and it led to a shootout with the robbers. As a result, 4 of the 6 men were shot including two of the minors.
