CountingSAN ANTONIO VILLAGE, Cayo, Sunday, February 24, 2013:

As the number of supporters expressing the desire to join Village Council slates for the United Democratic Party (UDP) continues to grow countrywide, the Party is fully engaged in conducting conventions in an increasing number of villages.

One such well attended convention took place on Sunday, February 24th, in the Western Village of San Antonio at the foothills of the Mountain Pine Ridge.

With two formidable candidates seeking supporters’ endorsements to contest the upcoming village council election as the UDP Chairman candidate, the taking of the polls began promptly as scheduled at 9:00 am.

The stream of voters casting their votes at two polling desks was constant throughout the day and by the time the polls were closed at 4:00 pm a whopping 601 people had cast their votes.

It was shortly after 5:00 pm, after all 601 votes were counted and the results were announced by the Convention Supervisor/Party Chairman, Alberto August that Cruz Mai, a former Chairman of the village, emerged victorious with 361 votes while the incumbent Chairman of the village, Rene Canto received 237 votes there were three rejected ballots.

In graciously accepting the wishes of fellow villagers, Chairman Rene Canto pledged to work closely with the new Chairman candidate, Cruz Mai to secure another three year term for the UDP in the agriculturally productive western village of San Antonio in the Cayo Central Constituency of the Honorable Minister of Works and Transport, Rene Montero.

For his part Cruz Mai, pledged to work hand in hand with Minister Montero and the United Democratic Party to address the needs of the people of San Antonio in terms of land issues, maintenance of farm roads and the provision of technical assistance in farming.

With a total of 972 voters on the official voters list for San Antonio, this 61.83% voter turnout is truly amazing and is a clear demonstration that San Antonio is once again placing its confidence and support behind the United Democratic Party and the Hon. Rene Montero.

There are several other such Inter-Party Village Council elections scheduled for other villages in the north and central districts as well as in Bella Vista in Toledo East and Bullet Tree Falls Village in Cayo North.
Despite the increasing numbers of supporters gravitating towards the Party, the call continues to be issued to formidable candidates countrywide to come forward and to join in the action as we continue to build the strongest political machinery this nation has ever seen.
