Coin Toss decided UDP Candidate in Arenal Print E-mail

ArenalARENAL VILLAGE, Cayo, Sunday, 10th March 2013:
As the United Democratic Party (UDP) continues to select only the best candidates to represent the Party in the upcoming round of village council elections, another inter-party convention was held today in the westernmost village of Arenal in the Cayo West Constituency of the Hon. Erwin Contreras.

In only two hours of voting, a whopping 45.47% of the voters on the list turned out to cast their ballots for the selection of the candidate to contest the post of UDP Chairman of their village.

The taking of the polls began at 3:00 pm and when the polls were declared closed at 5:00 pm, 181 of the 398 voters on the village list had cast their votes. The two candidates, incumbent Chairman, Lucio Alberto Sanchez and former Chairman, Alberto Alfredo Sanchez were invited to the table to tally their votes.  The process ended with an equal number of 89 votes each. There were 3 spoilt ballots.

As is the policy under these circumstances the winner was decided by the tossing of a coin which ended with the incumbent Chairman, Lucio Alberto Sanchez winning the coin toss. In graciously accepting the result, Alberto Alfredo Sanchez pledged full support of his cousin, Lucio. He informed the gathering that with the convention now over, the work must begin to secure a victory for Lucio and the young and dynamic team.

For his part, Lucio thanked Alberto for his expression of support he also pledged to work hard to return victory to the UDP in Arenal village.

The six candidates for UDP members of the council were presented as follows: Wilber Ramirez, 20; Myer Jose Naj, 20; Aurelio Gudiel Ruiz, 22; Ismael Flavio Guerra, 26; Edwin Augustine Pat, 31 and Maurio Edelmiro Romero, 33.

The proceeding was supervised by Party Chairman Alberto August, assisted by Senator Marconi Sosa the constituency Chairman Gonzalo Rosado under the watchful eyes of Area Representative Hon. Erwin Contreras.

Another highlight of the evening’s event was the announcement by Daniel Cano, Executive Director of the Social Investment Fund (SIF) of the planned construction of a fully furnished, half million dollar resource center in the village. Director Cano informed that a location change has resulted in changes in the design which is slated to be completed in about two months time after which the construction will commence. He informed that the new facility should be officially declared before the end of the current year.

In the closing remarks, Area Representative, Hon. Erwin Contreras thanked the villagers for attending and for participating in the day’s event.  He informed that construction of the new resource center will likewise provide needed employment in the community.
