Corozal Community College Marching BandOn Saturday, March 23rd, Mayor Simeon Lopez welcomed thousands of Belizeans to Belmopan as the capital city hosted the Belize Band Fest 2013 at the FFB Stadium.

Last year in Corozal Town, the Succotz Festival Drum Corps won the Band Fest competition for the fifth time in six years. Corozal Community College finished second and most of their supporters complained of being robbed by the judges. This year, the team was on a mission to prove that they really are the best and that Succotz’s reign as the best marching band in the land came to an end at the 2010 competition in Corozal Town when they dethroned the three-peat champs.

Corozal Community College took home $2,000 for winning the new category of best choreographed band sponsored by Oceana. They took home another $1,000  for winning the most popular band competition, which is a popularity contest sponsored by Digicell in which supporters vote via Digicell text for their favourite band in the competition. The Belmopan Youth Drum Corp won $1,000 for the best uniforms category. Holy Redeemer Marching Band took home $4,000 for winning the drum corp competition. Dangriga Drum Corp received $2,000 for second prize and Belmopan Youth received a trophy and medals for finishing third. The battle for the winner’s scepter is in the wind instruments category. Succotz Festival Drum Corps took home $1,000 cash along with a trophy and medals for a disappointing third place finish by the defending repeat and five time champs. Benque Viejo Marching Band finished in second place and took home $2,500 cash along with a trophy and medals. Corozal Community College was successful in its mission by taking home $6,000 cash and the winner’s scepter for winning Band Fest 2013.

Special guests at this year’s Band Fest were the Banda Marcial San Isidro from La Ceiba, Honduras and the Jesse White Tumbling Team from Chicago. The bidding process for the location of Band Fest 2013 will commence shortly. The event is a huge economic booster for the hosting municipality.
